The Aston Martin team may return to Mercedes engines.
The Autoracer publication reports curious rumors about the updated Honda power unit presented in Zandvoort and further plans from Aston Martin. It turns out that the Honda power unit still lags behind the best engine in the Formula 1 peloton by about 70 hp. In Zandvoort, the updated version was only 17 hp more powerful than its predecessor instead of the projected 30 hp, and this increase was achieved at the cost of a regression in the power unit's drivability. An unnamed Ferrari engineer believes that with such a gap, Honda will not be able to catch up with the best by 2027, citing the Scuderia from recent history, which took two years to reduce the power unit's deficit. Meanwhile, Aston Martin is expecting significant changes from Honda next season that should help the team reach a competitive level. At the same time, Aston Martin is already preparing a backup plan in case this does not happen. During the race weekend in Zandvoort, there was a meeting between Toto Wolff and Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll. Allegedly, they discussed the possibility of Aston Martin returning to Mercedes power units in 2028. Of course, neither Aston Martin nor Mercedes officially comment on anything.
