It’s official.
On Saturday, Tom Cruise announced on Instagram that a sequel to Days of Thunder is set to be released in summer 2028. The announcement featured Anne Hathaway, who will reportedly join the cast of this revived cult classic.
Filming for the new Days of Thunder has yet to start. During the announcement, Cruise and Hathaway playfully mentioned they would begin production once Hathaway has her baby, as she is expecting her third child.
The title for the Days of Thunder sequel has not been disclosed. The NASCAR race car depicted in the announcement simply featured Days of Thunder with “Summer 2028” on its side, adorned with the classic livery from the original film. The name Cole Trickle was displayed above the door, referencing the character Tom Cruise portrayed in the first movie.
In July, it was reported that Cruise had signed on for the sequel with Paramount, which was in search of a director for the film. The original Days of Thunder was directed by Tony Scott, who passed away in 2012.
Robert Duvall also appeared in the original film, but the legendary actor passed away in February. However, Randy Quaid, who played Tim Daland, a car dealership owner aspiring to create a NASCAR race team, is still alive and currently 75 years old.
In 2025, NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon expressed his desire to be part of the new Days of Thunder sequel, prior to the confirmation of the film or Cruise’s involvement.
Following the triumph of Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise indicated his desire to revive Days of Thunder with a similar approach. The original Days of Thunder was released after Cruise starred in the first Top Gun.
