Button hopes that Alonso will continue to compete in F1.

World Champion of 2009 and ambassador of the Aston Martin team Jenson Button called Fernando Alonso one of the greatest drivers in the history of Formula 1, comparing him to Michael Schumacher, and expressed hope that the Spaniard would continue his career next year.

Jenson Button: "Fernando's future is currently being actively discussed. I don't know if he will decide to spend another season in Formula 1, but I am sure that whenever he decides to retire, he will rightfully be considered one of the greatest drivers in history.

Although personally I hope he stays for a while longer. While we wait for his decision, I decided to reflect on those years when I was racing against him on the tracks.

The best compliment I can give Fernando is that racing against him was about the same as racing against Michael Schumacher. In my experience, racing against them has always been challenging, but it was fair racing and every time it was at the limit of our abilities. And I enjoyed that. That was one of the features of racing against them.

When I achieved my first victory in Formula 1 in Hungary, I was competing against them. And that’s what you want as a driver – to race against the best, the greats, to understand how good you are in comparison to them.

Throughout my career, I had the chance to compete not only with Fernando and Michael but also with Mika Hakkinen, Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen. I have been very lucky to compete against true legends of motorsport.

Fernando stands out for his driving style. If you paint all the cars the same color and send all the drivers out on the track, it would be hard to tell who is who. But when Fernando passes by, it immediately becomes clear that it is him. It’s all about how he acts behind the wheel.

Fernando drives completely differently than the others. He is aggressive, adapts perfectly to the situation, and he has been like that throughout his career."
