Ferrari's design team isn't shy about looking to the past for inspiration, particularly when crafting unique cars for affluent clients. But why should the factory have all the excitement? Ferrari's extensive history of iconic names and designs provides ample opportunities for third-party creations as well.
Set to be auctioned by Broad Arrow, the one-off Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage designed by Dutch designer Niels van Roij delves deeply into Ferrari history. It draws inspiration from another one-off that paid tribute to a classic Ferrari. The tale begins in 1972 when Bob Gittleman commissioned Luigi “Coco” Chinetti Jr.—the son of Luigi Chinetti, the former racing driver who founded the Ferrari franchise in North America—to create a unique vehicle. Chinetti Jr. collaborated with designer Gene Garfinkle, and they decided to pay homage to the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Breadvan.
The Breadvan was engineered as a race car, its distinctive bodywork aimed at providing aerodynamic benefits. However, Chinetti and Garfinkle envisioned their creation as a road-going grand tourer. They took a 365 GTB/4 Daytona coupe as a base and designed shooting brake bodywork featuring large windows and a fully glass tailgate reminiscent of European hearses. The aluminum exterior was crafted by the British firm Panther Westwinds, renowned for their Neo-Classics. The completed car was said to cost four times more than a standard Daytona.
Niels van Roij has a passion for shooting brakes. He has designed them based on the Rolls-Royce Wraith and Tesla Model S, and even transformed a 550 Maranello into a modern version of the Ferrari Breadvan. Thus, while the listing states that a client approached van Roij to create a tribute to the 1972 Daytona Shooting Brake, it's likely that the designer had the idea in mind beforehand.
The Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage is constructed on a 2009 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, which is evident in its lower bodywork, windshield, and side windows. However, the front and rear views faithfully replicate the Daytona's distinctive visored headlights and full-glass Kamm tail, respectively. According to the listing, the transformation took around 15,000 hours, incorporating modern techniques like CAD modeling and 3D printing alongside traditional craftsmanship. The 5.9-liter V12 engine, which originally produced 611 horsepower and 448 pound-feet of torque, remained unaltered.
If I had the effort of commissioning a one-off vehicle and waited nearly two years for its completion, I would probably want to keep it for a while. However, despite being unveiled only last July, the Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage is soon to find a new owner. Broad Arrow anticipates it will sell for between $524,000 and $757,000 at its Zoute Concours Auction, set for October 9.
