Button openly encourages Alonso to remain at Aston.
"Fernando drives in a way that no one else does"
Jenson Button has publicly called on his former teammate Fernando Alonso to remain in Formula 1, with Aston Martin sharing his remarks on its official website as uncertainty about the Spaniard’s future persists. The timing is significant as Honda has recently expressed its desire for Alonso to continue being part of the Aston Martin initiative.
Button, serving as an ambassador for Aston Martin, noted that Alonso’s retirement would signify the conclusion of one of the sport's illustrious careers, although he hopes that decision is not imminent. "I don’t know if he’s going to commit to another year in the sport, but I do believe that whenever he chooses to retire, he will rightfully be recognized as one of the true legends of F1," the Briton commented. "Personally, I hope he’ll continue a bit longer."
Having raced alongside Alonso at McLaren, Button emphasized that the 45-year-old Spaniard's adaptability is one of his key strengths. "Fernando drives like no one else," he remarked. "He’s aggressive, he adapts exceptionally well, and that’s been a hallmark throughout his career. Fernando can adjust to whatever conditions are presented to him. It’s a unique skill."
Button also stated that Aston Martin's current status gives Alonso a compelling reason to stay. "For Fernando, I think there’s still an exciting challenge ahead," Button mentioned. "This year has certainly been challenging, but it’s still an exhilarating time to be at Aston Martin and to collaborate with individuals like Adrian Newey. Any F1 driver would cherish the opportunity to race a car designed by him and to witness firsthand how he propels the team forward."
