Surer supports Budkowski's transition to Cadillac.

      Marc Surer thinks the mid-season management change at Cadillac is a logical move after ongoing technical issues revealed flaws within Formula 1's newest team. Cadillac recently appointed Marcin Budkowski to replace Graeme Lowdon following a challenging first half of the season for drivers Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez. In an interview with Speed Week, former F1 driver Surer noted that the team required someone with a stronger engineering background in a leadership role.

      "I believe the change was necessary to have someone oversee the engineers," he commented. "They kept encountering the same issues, including smoking, locked brakes, and broken suspensions. This wasn't a one-time incident, but rather a problem that evolved over time."

      "At some point, you have to consider what might be wrong with the engineers or whether there's a lack of leadership to address these challenges." Surer feels that Budkowski is well-equipped for this responsibility.

      "Budkowski is an engineer, and they likely trust him to advocate for himself and examine the engineers' work more rigorously." Surer noted that this is a rare mid-season change.

      He further emphasized that Cadillac's struggles are not unexpected for a completely new team. "I recall Pat Symonds mentioning at the season opener in Melbourne that they had never managed to have both cars on the track simultaneously," Surer said. "The logistics are extremely complicated."

      He stressed the importance of improved communication between the race track and the factory. "Having an engineer lead the race team is certainly beneficial in this respect. It all makes perfect sense."
