It’s well-known that seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has a fondness for the Ferrari F40. He displayed this passion by posing next to it during his first official photoshoot as a Scuderia Ferrari driver. More recently, he gained attention for cruising through the streets of Tokyo in another F40, sharing a video of his midnight adventures with Kim Kardashian. Today, he took to Instagram to announce that he has unearthed a remarkable barn find: his very own Ferrari F40.
While Hamilton doesn’t specify when he found the car, he mentions discovering it covered in dust after it had been in a garage “for over 30 years.”
“My very own F40. This is the car of my dreams and has been for as long as I can remember,” Hamilton stated on Instagram. “As a child, I dreamed of owning one. When I joined Ferrari last year, I made sure to have one on my first day in Maranello. That’s how much this means to me.
“These cars are masterpieces and incredibly rare. So when I found this one, shrouded in dust after sitting in a garage for over thirty years, I knew I had to bring her home. First to Maranello, where the skilled engineers and mechanics at the factory dedicated weeks to restoring her,” he continued. “A huge thank you to everyone involved in this project. This truly feels like a dream come true. I look forward to sharing more with all of you. Stay tuned…”
I’m unsure of the chances that Hamilton just happened to be jogging through a random town when he came across a slightly ajar garage door and spotted an F40 inside, or perhaps he was hiking through a remote area and stumbled upon a barn, only to discover his dream car hidden beneath some debris. Most likely, he had a scout from Maranello tracking down any lead on an untouched F40 that was available, and this was that lead. Hopefully, Hamilton will share the backstory someday.
Regardless, it’s wonderful to see Hamilton so genuinely thrilled about his latest acquisition, and to know that the Rosso Corsa supercar is now being revitalized through Ferrari’s Classiche program. I particularly enjoy the images of Hamilton with the car or next to the engine, almost as if he's a proud father with a newborn.
As discussed previously, there was a period when Hamilton decided to part with his car collection and even sold his private jet to reduce his carbon footprint. However, that seemed to shift around the time he transitioned from Mercedes to Ferrari, so now it appears he’s relishing in enjoying life as he pleases. Both decisions are commendable in their own ways, so kudos to him.
Given how he concluded his Instagram post with: “Stay tuned…” I’m certain we haven’t heard the last of this project. I’m looking forward to it.
