Genesis Equipped a GV60 with Snow Treads Since It's Awesome, Alright?

The Genesis GV60 “Mountain Intervention Vehicle” is a genuine concept, though it’s a unique piece currently showcased at the Ameron resort in Switzerland. It seems somewhat unexpected to present such a vehicle at the World Economic Forum occurring in Davos, but reminiscent of its icy surroundings, this snow-treaded SUV is undeniably impressive.

The GV60 serves as the Korean luxury car manufacturer’s compact electric model with a starting price around $55,000. I find them quite appealing, and our previous review was largely favorable. As for this concept version, enhancements include sporty seats, pronounced carbon fiber fender flares, and emergency communication and warning systems, as stated in Genesis’ press release. Additional features include a roof rack, skid plates, an innovative interior cargo management system, extensive lighting, and, notably, the wheels have been replaced with tracks.

The tracks seem to have been obtained from a European company named TrackSystems, renowned for converting a wide range of vehicles to enhance performance in severe snow conditions. After browsing their website, I’m uncertain about the exact cost of such a conversion, but it’s unlikely to be less than $10,000. The goal is generally to install the treads with minimal additional modifications to the vehicle.

The traction gained in extremely deep snow or mud would be extraordinary. With such extensive surface contact, a vehicle equipped with these tracks could navigate through nearly any treacherous terrain. However, the practical uses would primarily be limited to very snowy climates or marshy areas. Fuel consumption would be substantial due to this level of rolling resistance, and high-speed handling would be compromised. Additionally, the added weight would significantly reduce power efficiency.

Thus, while the snow-ready GV60 looks amazing, it wouldn’t be feasible on an electric vehicle. The battery would face immense challenges in this kind of cold while trying to manage such a heavy load. Nonetheless, the concept is stunning, and I admire how adventurous Genesis is becoming with its vehicle designs. If we consider functionality, the GV80 configured for Jacky Ickx appeared quite practical with its subtle off-road modifications and robust tire selection.

I hope the creative team at Genesis continues to embrace this imaginative spirit!
