Kyalami and Cape Town are vying to host the South African Grand Prix

South Africa is determined to bring a national round back to the country and is evaluating three bids from organizers - one from Kyalami and two from Cape Town. Kyalami has clear advantages. The circuit north of Johannesburg hosted twenty Grands Prix between January 1967 and March 1993, and although it is now outdated and only Grade 2, it looks like a ready-made solution. The organizers have agreed a deal with Apex, who will tidy up the track, and are ready to host a Grand Prix in 2027. Kyalami is the clear favorite, but the 2023 event was scrapped at the last minute due to a lack of financial guarantees, so now the organizers are required to plan a long-term commercial strategy to ensure financial stability throughout the 10-year term of the proposed contract. Two other different bids have been submitted by the organizers of the Grand Prix on the Atlantic coast in Cape Town. In February 2023, a Formula E round was held there, which was a success with fans, but turned out to be unprofitable and dropped from the calendar. The second proposal involves holding the race in a future "smart city" development project in Wakanda, which should become a business center like Singapore and Dubai, but there the track will not be ready before 10 years. The deadline for applications was limited to January 31, but has now been extended to March 18, so that potential bidders could more fully present the advantages of each of the projects. But even the final choice of option will not complete, but only start the process of Formula 1's return to South Africa. The chances of that return taking place are very high.
