Red Bull 'incensed' following FIA's reversal on flexi-wings.
Red Bull is said to be 'furious' over a new FIA crackdown on flexible wings set for 2025. Following controversies surrounding flexi-wings, particularly with McLaren, the governing body investigated the issue thoroughly last season but ultimately announced that the regulations would stay the same for 2025. However, it has now come to light that the FIA will indeed tighten the deflection tests by 5 millimeters, effective only from the Spanish Grand Prix in early June.
"Following further analysis by the FIA after the 2024 season, we are committed to ensuring that bodywork flexibility does not become a point of contention in 2025," a spokesperson for the Paris-based federation stated. Additionally, the FIA official mentioned that stricter checks on the rear wing will commence immediately this season.
As for the delay in implementing changes to the front wing until the Barcelona race, it is believed this is due to teams like Red Bull having already invested heavily in the development of their 2025 cars under the budget cap, which would then be rendered illegal. Ferrari could also be significantly impacted, as they postponed their front wing development in anticipation of the FIA's ruling, which ultimately confirmed that the regulations would remain unchanged for 2025.
Italian journalist Leo Turrini has mentioned that he has heard rumors of "sensational improvements" in lap times from Ferrari’s new simulator. Another Italian outlet, Autoracer, suggests that there is widespread belief among rival teams that McLaren significantly influenced the FIA's decision to tighten testing. This pressure reportedly followed a season finale where Ferrari demonstrated strong competitiveness, causing McLaren to worry about a potential Red Bull resurgence once their correlation and flexibility problems were resolved.
