Report suggests Susie Wolff may be a candidate for FIA president.
Susie Wolff, wife of Toto Wolff, could be on course to become the next president of the FIA. At the end of 2023, the current controversial president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, initiated an investigation into a possible conflict of interest involving Mercedes chief Toto and Susie, who leads the female-only ‘F1 Academy’ affiliated with F1. Following significant backlash from the F1 community, the investigation was abandoned, with Susie labeling it "misogynistic" and subsequently filing a criminal complaint regarding the allegations.
As reported by the Italian magazine Autosprint, the dispute between Ben Sulayem and the Wolffs may be connected to Susie’s rumored intention to challenge the existing FIA president in the upcoming elections later this year. The article proposes that the inquiry into the Wolffs served as a 'hidden message.'
Stefano Tamburini, a correspondent, remarked, "Regardless of how questionable Ben Sulayem’s actions may be, every step he has taken thus far has been rational." He continued, “Even those moves that appeared utterly irrational, like the swift initiation and conclusion of an investigation into Susie Stoddart, head of the Formula One Group’s all-female F1 Academy, and her husband Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal. In truth, it was a means of signaling that he was aware of the potential for Mrs. Wolff to enter the presidential election race."
The FIA presidential elections are set for December, and according to FIA regulations, Ben Sulayem is allowed to seek re-election for two additional four-year terms. A few months ago, Ben Sulayem expressed that he had no objections to others competing against him. "Honestly, 100 percent," he stated. "I would be more than happy. It’s democracy all of the time, not some of the time."
