Sainz explained why he decided to become director of GPDA

A few days before the start of pre-season testing, it became known that Carlos Sainz had become the new director of the GPDA association, which is essentially the Formula 1 drivers' union. At a press conference in Bahrain, Carlos explained why he decided to take on additional administrative responsibilities.

Carlos Sainz: "This winter I had time to think about some things. I was at home when I had the thought that maybe my time had come.

I am already 30 years old, of which I spent 10 years in Formula 1, and I have already begun to understand how this sport works, how the drivers, FOM and FIA interact with each other. I felt that, given my experience, I could nominate my candidacy.

I had a meeting with Alex Wurz in Monaco in January. He agreed with the proposal and supported my candidacy.

At that time, the GPDA had only one racing director, George Russell. I felt that I was ready for this position, and my colleagues also agreed with this and supported me. Their support has made everything easier."
