Liberty considers the acquisition of MotoGP a priority
Last year, the European Commission investigated the deal between Liberty Media and the Spanish company Dorna, as a result of which the American side would gain control of the MotoGP championship, and we talked about this.
The investigation, which is being conducted by European regulators, is currently in its second stage, and the deal cannot be completed without their approval. At a recent meeting with investors, Derek Chang, who assumed the post of executive director and president of Liberty Corporation in January, stressed that the acquisition of Dorna is on the list of priorities for 2025.
Derek Chang: "First of all, we are working to close the acquisition of Dorna. The MotoGP season (which started yesterday in Thailand) consists of 22 races, compared to 20 in 2024. Speaking about priorities, Chang also touched upon the topic of Formula 1 and the Las Vegas Grand Prix: "A lot of attention was drawn to the championship in 2024, and we are looking forward to another very interesting year. Since the beginning of the year, together with Stefano Domenicali and the Formula 1 management, we have devoted a lot of time to discussing further development issues.…
I would like to focus on the Las Vegas Grand Prix separately, as we are giving it priority attention. We see significant benefits in extending the experience of this Grand Prix to the broader Formula 1 ecosystem, which includes sponsorship, hospitality services, and entertainment.
Las Vegas has become a very successful testing ground for our product development approaches and has become a key factor in the growing popularity of Formula 1 in America.… The recent presentation at the O2 complex in London and the upcoming premiere of the F1 film are also becoming powerful marketing tools to influence all our fans..."
