Hamilton is learning Italian to better understand the team.

Over the years at Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton and his racing engineer Peter Bonnington have developed a set of key phrases, the most famous of which is hammer-time. Bonnington said these words at critical moments of the race, when Lewis needed to get the most out of the car.

Hamilton works with Riccardo Adami at Ferrari, and the seven-time world champion has already announced that he will not use the expression hammer-time in the Scuderia.

Lewis Hamilton: "I have not discussed this issue with my engineer yet, but I do not know how this phrase will sound with an Italian accent. Most likely, we will find a new Italian word."

Lewis explained that he has been learning Italian for a year now, but he periodically has to consult his notes to understand which part of the car the engineers are talking about: "The names of some elements are different. The stabilizer bar is also called the stabilizer bar, but some other suspension parts are designated in other words.

I have all the terms written out on my computer, and I learn them every day to understand when the team is talking about different components.

I've been on the same team for twelve years, and we've been talking about the same thing all this time. I'm just used to which word means what. But when Ferrari engineers mention a term at a briefing, I think, "What are we talking about now? Oh, that's what, I see."

It's all part of the learning process, but it's an interesting part because it's all new to me."
