Gunther Steiner: Red Bull's decision will benefit everyone
Gunther Steiner commented on Red Bull's decision to reshuffle their teams, as a result of which Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson will switch places starting from the Japanese Grand Prix. According to the former head of the Haas F1 team, and now an expert of the RTL TV channel, he understands the logic of Red Bull.
Gunther Steiner: "I can quite understand that. We have to take two things into account: first, none of the drivers lost their seats, Lawson and Tsunoda will just swap cars. I think it's better for Liam, and now he can drive without feeling so much pressure.
And Yuki has long assured me that he is ready to become a Red Bull Racing driver and deserves a place in this team. He's been driving for AlphaTauri/Racing Bulls for over four years now, and now let's see what he's really capable of. He will have to compete with a driver like Max Verstappen, and this is a risky business and requires courage.
Of course, this is a challenge for Yuki, but also an opportunity to continue his career in Formula 1. Because I personally do not know how Red Bull will choose its drivers after the separation from Honda next year. So Tsunoda got a good opportunity to draw attention to himself, but what happened wasn't so bad for Lawson either.
He didn't lose his car, it's just that it's different now. And he's still a young racer. Last year, Red Bull received a lot of criticism due to the fact that the team did not take action for a long time, although Sergio Perez stopped earning points. Perhaps that's why they've decided now: "We have nothing to lose, let's try."
I thought it would happen after Japan, because Liam didn't know the first two tracks, but Suzuka is very familiar to him, because there he competed in the Japanese Super Formula series. But the decision has already been made, and actually I think it will benefit everyone."
