During his sabbatical, Sergio Perez has opportunities in F1.
"The doors are open in numerous places."
Sergio Perez has strongly suggested that he plans to make a return to Formula 1. F1 legend Mario Andretti, who is an advisor to the new Cadillac team set to debut in 2026, recently indicated that the dismissed Red Bull driver is considered an "option." Currently, the 35-year-old Perez, a seasoned grand prix winner with strong backing from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim’s companies, is taking time off.
"I have six months," he stated to Prodynamics. "I’ve allowed myself six months to explore my options and decide on the next step in my career. The doors are open in many places," Perez continued. "I have the chance now to shape my career. The next steps are crucial, so I want to take the necessary time and space to make the best choice."
Despite his recent challenges alongside Max Verstappen, Perez's value has risen, especially since his successor Liam Lawson was dismissed after just two races, where he was the slowest overall in Shanghai. "In certain races last year, Sergio is looking like a magician now," remarked former F1 driver Mark Webber, who is the manager of Chinese GP winner Oscar Piastri, to Formula For Success.
According to Fox Sports, discussions between Cadillac and Perez are "already underway." Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko disclosed last Friday that he had been in contact with Perez amid the team's considerations about potentially letting Lawson go, presumably to talk about "tequila." Regarding Cadillac, Andretti also mentioned that another Mexican driver, Indycar front-runner Pato O’Ward, is another option, although the team may have to "fight" to secure him from his contract with McLaren.
