Berman: It's possible that we could have gone higher.
Oliver Berman distinguished himself in Suzuka: the young Haas F1 racer qualified for the finals. Esteban Ocon, his more experienced teammate, dropped out of the fight in the very first session and showed only the 18th result.
Oliver Berman (10th): "I made a mistake in the final attempt and lost some time - in general, it is possible that we could have risen to a higher position. Moreover, the results are very dense.
Already entering the 2nd session brought some relief and was a pleasant surprise, so I am pleased with today's result. If we talk about tomorrow, I'm not sure what the weather will be like and how it might affect the course of events.
In any case, the race promises to be fun, that's for sure. In Japan, the track is great and the fans are great, so reaching the qualifying finals can be considered an incredible achievement for our team."
Esteban Ocon (18th): "Unfortunately, we didn't succeed. We took different approaches to setting up the machines, and unfortunately, we missed something. We lost on several sections of the track, and the pace was clearly lower than it should have been.
However, it's great that in Oliver's case, everything worked out well. In general, we need to come together and draw conclusions for the future. If we talk about the weather, it could be anything tomorrow, so we have to give our best."
Ayo Komatsu, team leader: "Anyway, it was a very good day. Of course, we need to aim for both cars to make it to the finals, but before qualifying, we were going to ensure that both drivers entered at least the second session.
If you look at our training results, you can see that we improved from session to session, and we better understood how to act in order to achieve effective operation of the soft rubber. It seems that we didn't quite succeed after all, and I didn't expect such results.
But the team put in a lot of effort, Ollie did a great job, and his second attempt in the second part of qualifying was just great. He didn't do a perfect lap in the final session, but I'm not complaining.
I think it's good to see that if everything is done properly, you can get to the finals and even claim an even higher result, and this is a positive sign.
The results are very tight, the speed difference is not that big, and we just have to analyze the data collected to understand why Esteban ended up in the last positions."
