Michael Schumacher on the death of Ayrton Senna…

In the Netflix documentary Schumacher, there is an old interview with Michael in which he spoke about his reaction to the accident in Imola and the death of Ayrton Senna.…

Michael Schumacher: "Two hours after the race, technical director Tom Walkinshaw came up to me and said it was very bad. I replied, "He's just in a coma, and that doesn't mean it's bad." He said, "No. It's very bad." And then someone else came up and said, "He's dead."

I couldn't believe he was dead, couldn't think about it. I replied, "No, he's going to be a champion. He might miss one or two races, but then he'll be back."

The worst was over the next two weeks. I had to accept his death. I came to Silverstone and looked at everything with different eyes. I was driving along the highway in a road car and I was thinking: "This is where you can die, here's another place." I've raced there many times, and suddenly I saw places on the track where you can crash and die instantly.

I couldn't think of anything else, and I couldn't imagine how I would feel when I got behind the wheel of a racing car. I wasn't sure if I could pilot it, if I could attack it without thinking about the consequences, or if I would constantly tell myself: "This is where you can die if you fly out, this is where it will be bad." I didn't sleep more than three hours every night, and the rest of the time I was thinking about what had happened."

Michael Schumacher won the race on the next stage after the accident in Monaco, and finished second at Silverstone, but was disqualified.
