Garfinkel discusses the F1 contract in Miami for 2041.
"This enables us to be innovative and boost investment."
In 2041, Kimi Antonelli will be 35 years old while Fernando Alonso will be approaching retirement at the age of 60. That same year, Miami will still be assured a spot on the Formula 1 grid. "The contract positions the grand prix in Miami Gardens as the longest-standing race in Formula 1," stated a release, "and reflects the ongoing success of the event along with the sport's expansion in the United States."
This sharply contrasts with the situations of renowned European tracks like Imola (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain), whose agreements with F1 are nearing expiration. The champion of the Miami GP, which was introduced to the calendar in 2022, is Tom Garfinkel, president of the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium.
He addressed a group of reporters last weekend to outline Miami’s unique new status within Formula 1. "We aim to create something distinct, unique, and true to Miami," Garfinkel stated. "What works here might not work elsewhere, and vice versa," he remarked to AS newspaper.
Regarding the remarkable duration of the contract extension, he added: "Stefano (Domenicali) and I have been discussing for quite some time, due to the success of the last three years, our vision for this year and the goal of being here for an extended period."
"From a planning standpoint, this opens up opportunities for creativity and increased investment, considering there is a substantial private investment of hundreds of millions of dollars that needs to be recouped, which can’t be done in just five years."
"This agreement enables us to keep innovating and exercising creativity for the long haul. Stefano also understands that we want to do things correctly. We're not pursuing shortcuts. We're not focused on making money, but rather on organizing an excellent event and expanding the sport in the United States. We're signaling that we intend to remain."
