Marko has no regrets about demoting Lawson.
"Liam struggled to cope with the pressure at Red Bull."
Dr. Helmut Marko stated that Red Bull has no regrets about letting go of Liam Lawson just two races into the 2025 season. Lawson has been replaced by the more seasoned Yuki Tsunoda, who has now competed in the sister car alongside Max Verstappen for four races, and team advisor Marko asserts that Tsunoda has proven himself worthy of keeping his seat for the remainder of the season.
"Yes," Marko, 82, confirmed to Bild newspaper when asked if he believes it was the right choice. When it was pointed out that Tsunoda’s points tally thus far is minimal, the Austrian responded, "Yes, but he’s much closer to Max than Liam was. In just his second race with Red Bull, he finished in the points. That was a great performance and evidence that we made the correct decision. When was the last time we had two cars in the points? I can’t recall," Marko commented.
New Zealander Lawson, 23, has been relegated to the brand’s junior team, Racing Bulls, where he has yet to score any points with either vehicle in 2025. However, some may contend that only allowing him two races with the senior team was a harsh decision by Red Bull.
"Liam couldn’t manage the pressure at Red Bull," Marko claimed. "That’s why it was the correct choice to replace him with someone else. We know what we’re doing," he added. "And we haven’t abandoned Liam - he’s still competing in Formula 1 and holds one of only 20 seats worldwide. He has been well received there and is performing better again."
