Andrea Stella on the causes of overtaking problems in Monaco

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella considers the design of modern Formula 1 cars to be the main reason for the lack of overtaking in Monaco.…

Andrea Stella: "I think we should positively assess the fact that Formula 1 and the FIA have tried to improve the entertainment of the Monaco race this year. The main problem is the lack of overtaking, but this is a natural limitation, and I'm not sure if it can be changed by simply increasing the number of pit stops.

I'm wondering what will change next year, when cars will become smaller, traction will decrease and braking zones will become longer. The cars will have a completely different power plant, different dynamics. Hopefully, such a global change will make overtaking in Monaco possible, at least when you are three seconds faster.

Now, even with a three-second difference, you won't be able to overtake. I think it has a lot to do with the size of the cars and the high traction, which makes all braking zones very short. There is simply no place to attack on braking.

I believe that in an attempt to increase the number of overtaking in Monaco, we need to look not at the number of pit stops and strategy, but at the design of the cars. I think that's what we should focus on if we want to see a fight on this track."
