Alonso refutes claims that he is not in favor of the new Madrid Grand Prix.

"It's fantastic news for Spain to host two grands prix."

Fernando Alonso has expressed his support for Madrid being included in the Formula 1 calendar. Recently, the two-time champion was announced as an ambassador for Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya, which is fighting for its place in F1. In contrast, Madrid is set to make its debut on the calendar next year and holds a long-term contract with Formula 1, even taking over the official Spanish GP title.

Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, the mayor of Madrid, believes that Alonso may not support the new street race in the Spanish capital. When informed that Alonso might be indifferent about the Madrid GP, the mayor told El Mundo: "I think it’s exceptionally good that Alonso can race twice a year in Spain. If he doesn’t believe it’s beneficial for Madrid, he will need to clarify why. All Spaniards should be pleased that there will be two grands prix in Spain in 2026."

However, the 43-year-old Alonso maintains that he would be pleased if both Madrid and Barcelona could thrive alongside each other in the future. "Of course it’s great news for Spain to have two grands prix," he stated. "I’m excited about it. I’m looking forward to exploring a new track in my career, and in Spain, we’ve previously raced at three circuits - Valencia, Madrid, and Barcelona - so I hope this new track will be a good one."
