Le Mans medalist had a serious accident at Nordschleife
Last Sunday, Belgian racer Laurent Ventour, along with his Porsche Penske crew mates, took the podium at Le Mans - their car No. 6 finished in 2nd place, 14 seconds behind Robert Kubica's Ferrari hypercar.
And this weekend Laurent was supposed to start another daily marathon, "24 hours Nurburgring", and today qualifying took place on the classic German track, i.e. on the "Northern Loop".
The crew of the Porsche 911 GT3 of the Scherer PHX team was fighting for pole position, but a spectacular accident occurred, after which the final session was stopped with red flags for a long time. Car No. 16 was very badly smashed, but fortunately Laurent got out of the cockpit himself, although, of course, the team confirmed that the crew would not be able to take part in the race.
Vanthur was coming out of the left turn, but before the Aremberg turn his Porsche turned sharply – the car flew to the side of the road, and the driver did nothing. He could have done it. She hit the inside curb at Aremberg sideways, jumped into the air, crossed the highway, then the gravel safety zone and crashed into the barriers. It was clear that the impact was very strong, and all that remained of the car was the cockpit itself, protected by a sturdy safety frame.
The accident once again confirms the dangerous nature of the Nordschleife, especially the high-speed sections of the 25.378 km circle.
