Coulthard advises Norris to spend his energy more efficiently

David Coulthard believes that racers who achieve outstanding success in Formula 1 and become champions have one thing in common: they manage their time very efficiently and use their energy correctly, directing it only to solve the most important tasks.

This is the former Formula 1 racer, who in the past played for teams such as Williams, McLaren and Red Bull spoke when asked to share his opinion on the situation of Lando Norris, who is clearly inferior to Oscar Piastri, his team-mate, in psychological training.

In particular, the Scot drew attention to the fact that Norris, when talking to the press, usually tries to explain what his difficulties are, prefers to take the blame on myself – as it was after the recent incident in Canada, without shifting responsibility to the team. On the one hand, this is a good trait, on the other, this approach hardly makes his life easier.

"You know, I believe that each of us does what he sees fit," Coulthard argued in an interview with GPBlog. – If you're asking how I would behave, then I think the less you talk, the less you have to explain. The more you talk, the more you have to explain.

You start the day feeling full of energy, but then you spend 20% of your energy on all kinds of explanations and only 80% on piloting. And another driver, no less talented, spends 95% on piloting, and therefore he has more strength.

It is not necessary to give 100% in each race, because the season is long and exhausting. And it's not always possible to recharge your batteries and fully restore your strength.

However, I don't want to be quoted like this: "Coulthard says you can't win the championship that way." I don't know, I've never been a world champion. But I've gained a lot of experience in my life and I'm pretty good at understanding how world champions won their titles. My teammates were Damon Hill, Mika Hakkinen and Kimi Raikkonen, all of whom became world champions.

I also worked closely with Nigel Mansell for a year, with Alain Prost for a year, and for several months with Ayrton Senna (in the first half of the 90s, David was a Williams test driver). I had such teachers both before and during my career. And all these riders were very efficient with their time."
