Mourinho expresses sympathy during Ferrari's downturn.
"I feel absolutely terrible."
Football manager icon Jose Mourinho expresses a distinct sympathy for the leading Formula 1 drivers at Ferrari during their recent challenging period. As speculation continues regarding the fate of team principal Frederic Vasseur, Charles Leclerc vocalized the immense pressure he felt over the team radio after both he and Lewis Hamilton missed their opportunity for pole position. In a moment of frustration, Leclerc directed his anger at himself, stating, "I feel absolutely terrible. That's all I am," said the Monegasque.
Even Hamilton made an error in Q3, which prompted an uncommon criticism from Vasseur. "A few races ago, it was more about structural issues," the Frenchman shared with Sky Italia. "Today, it came down to mistakes. The car was competitive; it was two drivers who didn’t execute perfectly on the crucial lap. We need to improve in that area."
After gathering himself a bit, Leclerc hesitated to accept full responsibility. "I’m fed up with coming up to the microphones and saying this or that was lacking," he remarked. "I don’t feel the same as I did in qualifying with the 2024 car. We have specific issues, and qualifying becomes trickier because there are oddities with the car, but we are aware of their origins."
Leclerc then cryptically stated, "There is something else in the car that we have not discussed, and it’s better that way. We are grappling with this issue and hope to find a resolution soon."
This weekend, one well-known figure in the Silverstone paddock has been Jose Mourinho—the legendary, divisive, and extremely successful football manager. When asked if he had any advice for Ferrari during their current tough situation, he replied, "Ferrari is the Real Madrid of Formula 1.
"At Real, it’s said that when you wear the white jersey, you’re already winning 1-0. It’s the same with Ferrari—stepping onto the track means you are a winner. But while donning red is a dream, it also comes with immense responsibility.
"It’s understandable that representing such a prestigious brand requires a lot of accountability and pressure," Mourinho added. "How do you handle that pressure? By winning." Out of the four leading teams in F1 this year, Ferrari remains the only one without a victory.
"You must possess the strength to overcome challenges," Mourinho continued, "to have confidence in yourself, and to strive for the time that owners and fans often deny you. However, as a coach, player, team manager, or driver, you need to believe in yourself and in your teammates' efforts."
