Wolff reveals that Briatore is keen on signing Bottas.

Toto Wolff acknowledges that he has had "a few discussions" with his Alpine counterpart Flavio Briatore regarding a rising name in the driver market - Valtteri Bottas. At 35, the 10-time grand prix champion is no stranger to Formula 1, but has largely been out of the limelight after losing his Sauber race seat at the end of the previous season. His career found new life for 2025 thanks to his former boss and friend Wolff, who granted Bottas the full-time Mercedes reserve seat that was previously held by Mick Schumacher.

Recently, a rumor surfaced in Austria that Wolff had been called to a meeting with Briatore, who has been increasingly displeased with Franco Colapinto’s inconsistent performance. Colapinto’s chances of maintaining his spot at Alpine took a further hit on Saturday after another crash during Q1. Following the incident, it was noted that the 21-year-old Argentine appeared particularly dejected. When asked about his concerns regarding Briatore potentially replacing him, Colapinto responded, “Not too much. There are always different rumors, but I just need to keep working and assist the team in improving the car."

However, even prior to that incident, Briatore seemed to be strategizing a backup plan. When asked if he had talked to Briatore about Bottas, Wolff told Viaplay, “Actually, a few times. I saw him today and we discussed Valtteri.” He added, “It looks like the interest in Valtteri is growing even more.” Wolff has Bottas under contract for the entire year but stated he would not obstruct his friend from returning to the grid. “He deserves that position,” Wolff commented. “If someone signs him as a race driver, we’ll let him go, of course, with a tear in our eye.”

Bottas is also heavily linked to a full-time seat at Cadillac next year, and some believe that spending half a season at Alpine alongside the in-form Pierre Gasly could jeopardize his chances of securing a multi-year deal. “Ultimately, I give him advice as a friend,” Wolff reaffirmed. “Valtteri ultimately decides with his management. I try to remain in the background.”
