Vasseur: This time the problem isn't with the car.
If during the Silverstone practice sessions it seemed that the Ferrari drivers were among those setting the pace, in qualifying they lost a few positions and will start today’s British Grand Prix from the 5th and 6th positions. Lewis Hamilton finished less than three hundredths of a second ahead of Charles Leclerc, his teammate.
Scuderia chief Frederic Vasseur did not hide his disappointment with these results.
“The car was competitive in all three qualifying sessions,” he emphasized on Sky Sport Italy. “Lewis was about a tenth ahead of Oscar Piastri until the final corners, but that’s where he lost everything. Of course, it’s pointless to gain an advantage if you can’t hold onto it until the finish line.
Simply put, our rivals managed to do better by coming together in the crucial moments of qualifying. What was the problem for us? Honestly, nothing serious. A few stages ago, the issue was with the car, but not this time.
Both drivers made mistakes. For example, Charles lost a lot of time in Turn 1 and then again in Turn 17. If not for those mistakes, we would have been fighting for front-row positions.”
And yet, Vasseur’s comments contained a note of optimism: “But the car was capable of a decent pace, and from the very start of the weekend, we showed strength, so before the race, we’re in a confident mood. Overall, we made a step forward in terms of raw speed, and that’s what matters on Sunday.”
