Alonso states that Newey is "not interested" in the 2025 vehicle.
"The car likely felt somewhat improved."
Adrian Newey has minimal "interest" in Aston Martin’s 2025 vehicle, according to Fernando Alonso. While the two-time champion was let down by a subpar race strategy compared to his teammate Lance Stroll, Stroll, who is the son of the team's owner, openly criticized the car after the race concluded at Silverstone. "Honestly, it’s the worst piece of crap I’ve ever driven in my life," Stroll told his engineer over the radio. "But it’s ok - P7." This comes despite the fact that the Silverstone-based team had rolled out upgrades for the 2025 single-seater during their home British Grand Prix. Alonso remarked, "I believe it has been a step forward. The car probably felt a bit better. The data also indicates that in certain parts of the circuit we have improved, although it's harder to notice in others. So let's say it's a very minor package of enhancements, but they are always appreciated. If it's half a tenth or a tenth, we’ll take it," he told DAZN.
Some find it surprising that Aston Martin hasn’t made more significant advancements now that arguably the greatest F1 designer ever, Newey, is diligently working at his drawing board. "Newey is on the job," Alonso stated. "He’s engaged and very motivated. However, it’s evident that this year's car doesn’t seem to captivate him. Whenever we pose a question about this year or how to enhance something, he simply heads to another office," the 43-year-old chuckled. "He’s already focused on 2026." Alonso also expressed significant frustration that his race strategy on a challenging and variable day under the overcast Silverstone skies was vastly inferior to Stroll’s. "From now on, I’ll just follow Lance's timing," the Spaniard said, "because typically, in these situations, his team of engineers tends to be more precise."
