Vaules: We scored fewer points than we expected.
James Vowles, Williams Racing team principal, summed up the team's performance at the British round of the season, admitting that they made a mistake in forecasting the weather conditions.
James Vowles: "The weekend at Silverstone is behind us, and first of all, I want to congratulate Sauber and Nico Hülkenberg on a great result – they deserved it. Many other participants faced difficulties due to challenging weather conditions during the race.
As for our situation: we did not expect the track to be so wet, especially since we had set up the cars assuming the race would take place in relatively dry weather. It was clear that when intermediate tires were needed—and even when the asphalt was starting to dry—our performance was poor.
Aston Martin drivers overtook us, and we lost quite a lot of time compared to our competitors. But closer to the end of the race, Alex Albon was flying, managed to overtake Fernando Alonso, and finished eighth. This is an example of how much our car’s efficiency varied.
We also didn’t act optimally when it came to choosing the right moment to switch to the second set of intermediate tires. However, Sauber acted excellently, and now we need to analyze what could have been done better to more accurately predict the conditions during the race.
All of this put us in a difficult position, and we lost time behind other cars until the track started drying toward the end of the race. We will need to analyze everything thoroughly and learn the necessary lessons, but now it’s time to prepare for the Spa race.
The team is working on several technical innovations for the Belgian round – we hope they will help us improve and allow us to fight back. The battle for the middle group of teams remains intense and will continue until the end of the year.
The Spa track has always suited our car well – similarly, last year, Silverstone was also favorable. But today, it’s disappointing to note that we scored fewer points at the British round than we anticipated. But what happened, happened.
Regarding Carlos Sainz, he did everything completely correctly, both in qualifying and in the race, but circumstances beyond his control influenced his situation. When a Ferrari spun in front of him, he had to react quickly to avoid an accident.
He said over the radio that he was unlucky – I don’t believe in luck factors, but I do believe that hard work will ultimately be rewarded. We just need to reset and get back into the fight at Spa. The pace Carlos is showing will enable him to earn points at all remaining races this season."
