Button: Replacing Russell with Verstappen seems strange.

The racing world continues to comment on the potential transfer of Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing to Mercedes. 2009 world champion Jenson Button believes that if Toto Wolff arranges a contract with Max, then Kimi Antonelli should give up his seat at Mercedes to him, not George Russell.

Jenson Button: "Max faces a difficult decision, as he is currently in a very comfortable position where everything works for him, and the team has put enormous effort into him over many years. The car built for Max suits him perfectly – no one can match his pace. I mean, if Max qualifies third or fourth, his teammate is eighteenth.

If Verstappen moves to Mercedes, everything will be different. At least, the car won't be designed around his preferences. Will he be able to succeed then? I don't know.

It's not an easy situation for George either, because he's currently in top form. He is highly competitive, and considering how he raced alongside Lewis Hamilton for several years, it's clear that George has championship potential.

So, replacing Russell with Max seems like a very strange decision. I know Mercedes has 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli, who could become a star in the future. But we don’t know that right now.

At the same time, George is very good, and the team needs two competitive drivers in this new era. Next year, regulations, cars, and engines will change. I think, in such a situation, George and Max would make a more suitable pairing of drivers."
