Wolff: It took time to figure everything out.
In mid-May, Mercedes installed a new rear suspension on their cars, hoping for progress, but unexpectedly regressed. The car was then tweaked several times, but the problem was only solved in Hungary, where the team simply reverted to the old suspension. Team principal Toto Wolff explained the reasons.
Toto Wolff: "We tried to solve the problem that arose during the update in Imola with other updates, but it only added instability. It took a few races to get everything sorted out.
Additionally, we were somewhat misled by our victory in Montreal, which made us think things weren’t that bad. But the new parts behaved differently there than on other tracks, and we temporarily returned to good form before sliding back again.
In developing new components, extensive simulations and checks are conducted, but they can provide misleading information. To get a true assessment, you need to step out of the digital world into the real one, put a physical part on the car, and see how it performs. And if reality differs from the digital model, the consequences can be unpredictable — as we experienced firsthand."
