Alesi aligns with critics as pressure intensifies on Hamilton at Ferrari.
"Senna or Schumacher would never make such a statement."
Former Ferrari driver Jean Alesi has joined the increasing number of voices questioning Lewis Hamilton's current mindset, following the seven-time world champion's remarks after the Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton, 40, referred to himself as "useless" after the qualifying session and implied Ferrari should "get another driver," sparking widespread speculation about his motivation and future with the Maranello team. "In my view, Hamilton’s attitude is disheartening for those around him," stated Alesi, 61. "Senna or Schumacher would never express that."
This criticism mirrors recent comments from Ralf Schumacher and Bernie Ecclestone, both of whom have suggested Hamilton should contemplate retirement. However, support for the British driver remains. Mercedes chief Toto Wolff, in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, defended Hamilton’s response during challenging times. "When he faces difficult situations, he takes responsibility," Wolff remarked. "That’s a trait of the greats: instead of blaming the team, they reflect on their own performance. Once this phase passes, he will return with the same drive as always."
Wolff also commended Ferrari’s choice to keep team principal Frederic Vasseur, whose future was uncertain until a new contract was confirmed last week. "Any other decision would have been quite foolish," Wolff commented. "I've known Fred since we were in our twenties, and I recognize his worth as a motorsports professional. I understand his entrepreneurial vision and strength. Having someone like him in your team is a privilege, and it’s essential to realize how long it takes in F1 to establish a successful project."
