Colapinto crashes the Pirelli test car as the pressure increases.
"Franco was evaluated on-site at the medical center and is fine."
Franco Colapinto's challenging return to Formula 1 has faced another setback after the Alpine driver suffered a significant crash during post-race tire testing in Hungary. While competitors like George Russell and Max Verstappen take their August break, 22-year-old Colapinto stayed on duty, participating in a Pirelli test aimed at simulating the 2026 technical regulations with a specially modified Alpine. However, on Wednesday, the Argentine lost control at Turn 11 and crashed.
A spokesperson for the team confirmed, "Franco was assessed on site at the medical center and is OK." La Gazzetta dello Sport described the incident as Colapinto having "destroyed" the Alpine. Pirelli released a statement indicating that the crash was "not related to the tyres." La Gazzetta correspondent Alessandro Miglio provided a straightforward assessment. "Colapinto’s return to Formula 1 has been disastrous," he stated. "The Argentine has not scored a single point and has been involved in multiple accidents, affecting Alpine’s development due to the budget cap. This is not the ideal outcome for a team seeking redemption."
Colapinto joined Alpine earlier this season on a loan deal facilitated by Flavio Briatore, taking over from Jack Doohan after making an impression during a mid-2024 debut with Williams. However, with rumors of a race-by-race arrangement, the pressure continues to build.
