Marko suggests that Verstappen may reevaluate his options after 2026.

"You cannot predict whether someone will win big."

Dr. Helmut Marko acknowledges that Max Verstappen might choose to leave Red Bull after 2026, even though he recently confirmed his commitment to the team. The four-time world champion's contract extends until 2028, but ongoing rumors regarding 2024 and 2025 have indicated that there could be exit clauses enabling an early departure. The situation calmed when Christian Horner was dismissed earlier this year, and Verstappen stated before the summer break that he would remain until 2026.

"His comments made it evident that he wanted to stay, which is logical, even if the exit clause had become effective," Marko told f1-insider.com. However, the approaching rule changes for 2026 create uncertainty around Verstappen’s future. "No one can predict what things will be like in 2026," Marko admitted.

"Mercedes has declared itself the leader in engines, but there’s no proof of that. On the chassis side, it’s uncertain whether someone will strike gold. Therefore, there's a lot of unpredictability, and from his standpoint, it makes much more sense to remain, observe the situation, and if we are not competitive next year, then reconsider his decision."

Despite having confirmed his stay until 2026, Verstappen has been seen vacationing with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, which has sparked speculation about a potential long-term move. However, with Verstappen committed at least until 2026, Mercedes is concentrating on George Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli.

Wolff commented to formula.hu: "We understood what it meant to have an 18-year-old in the car. We recognized the promise, but we also knew it would involve significant pressure. Never in history has an 18-year-old driver debuted in a race-winning car. I mentioned from the beginning that there would be difficult days and weekends, but also moments of brilliance. That’s exactly what we’re witnessing. He’s learning, adapting, developing, occasionally making mistakes, but he’s incredibly fast at the same time. Our plan to develop Kimi Antonelli is progressing smoothly," Wolff added.

Regarding Russell, discussions about his contract beyond 2025 are ongoing, with reports indicating that he is seeking more than a one-year extension. Nonetheless, Wolff is certain about his worth. "We can always count on him," Wolff stated. "He cultivates excellent relations with our partners and engages in commercial activities that enhance both his brand and the team's reputation. We couldn’t ask for a better driver."
