Piastri: Lando and I can choose different strategies

At the previous round in Hungary, after the first lap Lando Norris found himself behind teammate Oscar Piastri, but he won the race thanks to a different strategy. In Zandvoort the championship leader Piastri answered the question of why McLaren did not put both drivers on the same strategy, since then the victory would have gone to him.

Oscar Piastri: "After the race in Hungary we discussed the [strategy] with the team. Simply put, it was one of those cases when, on a track where position is important, the driver who is behind loses less. It would have been unfair for McLaren to 'neutralize' that advantage by putting both drivers on the same strategy.

After the finish we discussed everything. Sometimes in races the situation plays out so that the car closing off a group is in a more favourable position because it loses less than the others. Such moments will always happen, and it would be unfair to strip someone of that advantage just so both of the team's drivers are on the same strategy.

We had multiple discussions about the past race, and those discussions were very productive. Moreover, Lando and I will be able to choose alternative strategies in the future if we want to.

We discussed with the team how to act in similar situations in the future, because it is hard to take into account all the different strategy permutations, especially when you are fighting for the title."
