Vaulz: Congratulations, Carlos — great job!

At Williams they are pleased with Carlos Sainz's ninth place in qualifying at Zandvoort…

James Vowles, team principal: "Congratulations to Carlos — great job! Today we saw perhaps the closest qualifying results in Formula 1 history.

Alex was in good form and could have made the final too, but we're on the edge when it comes to tyre performance, and a slightly slower lap behind another car didn't allow for more. We'll analyse the situation and try to improve.

We know our car is more competitive in the race. Overtaking at Zandvoort is difficult, but there are chances, especially if the weather helps."

Carlos Sainz (9th): "When the track temperature went up, we lost pace. We need very stable conditions, and although I'm disappointed not to take a higher place, today we maximised our opportunities. We'll keep an eye on the weather and try to do better in the race."

Alex Albon (15th): "A bad day. We've been quick all weekend and strong in qualifying, but on the second run in the second session the tyres just weren't working. The operating window is very small, and a few minutes of waiting in the pit lane didn't allow us to heat the tyres effectively, and for us every detail has to be perfect, including the out-lap. I was sure we'd easily make the final, but the tyres went out of the operating window.

Tomorrow will be tough, the race could be like a procession, but we'll see what the weather does."
