South Africa overcomes government obstacle for its return to F1 in 2027.
Guarantees for an initial three-year agreement lasting until 2029
Africa has made another significant move towards reinstating its presence on the Formula 1 calendar. This week, South Africa's cabinet approved the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture's proposal to host a grand prix at Kyalami starting in 2027. Minister Kumbudzo Ntshaweni confirmed, "South Africa aims to host Formula 1 at Kyalami in 2027." She noted that the bid is entirely financed by the South African private sector and, if successful, will aid in job creation and economic growth. She also mentioned that the plan includes guarantees for an initial three-year contract extending to 2029.
Kyalami, located north of Johannesburg, last held a Formula 1 event in 1993. The FIA has already sanctioned plans to upgrade the circuit to Grade 1 status, with completion expected by next year. This announcement coincides with Formula 1's confirmation that one of its most iconic events will remain on the schedule for the long term, as Monaco's street race has been extended until 2035. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali praised the "unique vibe" of the glamorous Principality, while Prince Albert II remarked that the new agreement reflects Monaco’s "distinctive position in the international motorsport landscape." The extension for Monaco builds on an existing contract that was set to run through 2031, securing the sport’s oldest and most distinguished street race for another decade.
