Alonso humorously comments on his 28-0 qualifying record against Stroll.

"I’ve experienced a lot of misfortune during the races."

Fernando Alonso has pointed out the irony of his flawless qualifying record against his Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll, which now stands at 28-0 following Monza. When asked by Mundo Deportivo about this streak, the 44-year-old Spaniard redirected the discussion to his struggles on race day. "What does it signify? It means I’ve encountered very bad luck in the races," he commented. "Being behind in the points when I’m arguably at my best during qualifying and in handling pressure situations, like the one at Monza, shows that my fortunes on Sundays have been truly disastrous."

He continued, "So we hope for a change by 2026—where I might miss some qualifying success but have plenty of luck on race days." Alonso is set to start from eighth position following Lewis Hamilton’s penalty but acknowledged that Aston Martin's lack of straight-line speed creates challenges. "I expected we’d begin in 14th or 16th with points seemingly out of reach. Now, starting in the points changes the outlook, so I feel a bit more optimistic," he said.

When pressed about his tendency to shift the conversation from qualifying achievements to race shortcomings, Alonso smiled, saying, "That’s a different article for you. I won’t comment further. I’m just doing my job."

He acknowledged the pros and cons of having either Max Verstappen or Fernando Alonso on your team, smiling again. Nonetheless, he cautioned that his race day is likely to focus on damage limitation. "Starting from eighth means knowing you’ll probably lose two or three positions," Alonso explained. "Hamilton will likely overtake us. Hulkenberg probably will too. The Williams cars are not far behind. So we need to stay vigilant."
