Piastri is 'more stable' than Norris in the championship race.

"It appears that Norris is still on a journey of self-discovery."

Former F1 driver David Coulthard shared his thoughts on the only significant championship contest remaining in 2025 - the internal McLaren rivalry between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Norris’ mechanical failure at Zandvoort widened the gap to 34 points, positioning Piastri - composed, calm, and less seasoned - as the new frontrunner.

"Lando is in his seventh season and Oscar in his third, and yet it seems that Norris is still seeking his true self, learning more about who he is," Coulthard stated to Belgian broadcaster RTBF at Monza. "In contrast, Piastri appears very solid and consistent at this stage. This is undoubtedly the most significant distinction between them."

Norris frequently finds himself countering claims of mental weakness. "He has mentioned before that he looks up to Verstappen as a role model," Coulthard noted. "That’s the persona he aspires to emulate because Max is quite incisive, aggressive, and exudes confidence outside the car.

"However, one cannot pretend to be someone else. You are influenced by your surroundings, upbringing, and experiences. I recall during my rivalry with Schumacher, I faced criticism for being too kind. But one must remain authentic. This is not a contest of personalities. The championship is determined on the track," remarked the Scot.

Coulthard anticipates that McLaren’s ’papaya rules’ will stay in effect until the team has mathematically clinched the constructors’ title, with securing third place in the drivers’ standings also being a significant milestone.

"The crux of the championship will be when McLaren secures the constructors’ title," he added. "We recognize that this is their priority, which is why we observe these well-known rules. Winning this title again is crucial for them financially.

"And I believe that once they secure this title, which could happen as early as Baku, the drivers will be able to pursue their personal ambitions in the drivers’ championship.

"Currently, neither can afford a mistake or end up with zero points. In such scenarios, winning the race is secondary - it is absolutely vital to finish at least second or third. A mistake by either driver could represent a pivotal moment in the championship."
