FIA: 10 teams will participate in the Macau Grand Prix.

The FIA, together with the organizers of the Macau Grand Prix, announced that this year 10 teams will take part in the race that traditionally closes the season in the junior series. In 2024 there were 11.

Officially, the competition on the very demanding street circuit in Macau has a fairly high status – it is the Formula Regional World Cup, and winning it is considered a very prestigious achievement.

The Dutch team MP Motorsport, New Zealand’s Kiwi Motorsport and Japan’s TGM Grand Prix, which competed in Macau last year, will not come this time, but Italian Trident and the Netherlands’ Van Amersfoort Racing (VAR) have reappeared on the entry list.

Last year the Macau Grand Prix was won by Ugo Ugochukwu, an American driver and member of McLaren’s junior programme, who competed for the French team R-ace GP, and now the team will try to repeat that achievement. Also joining the grid will be cars from ART Grand Prix (France), Evans GP (Australia), PHM Racing (Germany), Pinnacle Motorsport (a Philippine team competing under an Irish license), Prema (Italy), Sainteloc Racing (France) and TOM’S (Japan).

Trident competed in Macau in 2019 and 2023, when the race was considered the unofficial world final of Formula 3. Van Amersfoort Racing’s history in the Macau Grand Prix goes back much further – the team made its debut there in 1998.

By the way, in 2014 Max Verstappen raced for them. The future four-time world champion set the third-fastest time in qualifying, failed to finish the qualifying race, and in the main race of the weekend fought his way up from 24th to 7th.

The following year Charles Leclerc drew attention: he also raced for VAR and posted the third-fastest time in qualifying, after which he finished second in both the qualifying race and the main race.

But the team is remembered not only for sporting achievements: it was their car that Sophia Floersch was driving in Macau in 2018 when she was involved in a very serious crash, and that incident is still remembered in the motorsport world. Fortunately, the German driver made a full recovery and continued her career.

In 2025 the Macau race weekend programme will take place from 13 to 16 November, and for the first time it will include the Formula 4 World Cup.
