Lawson gave his teammate advice in case he moved to Red Bull.

At an FIA press conference in Baku, Liam Lawson explained why he didn’t perform at his best in Monza and also shared the advice he would give Isack Hadjar if the latter were to become a Red Bull Racing driver.

Liam Lawson: “This year Racing Bulls have a pretty decent car, so I’m looking forward to the race in Baku. Although I suppose things didn’t go well in Monza, even though we didn’t really have any major problems. It’s just that in qualifying we decided to be aggressive, but in the end that approach didn’t work.

Of course, we always analyse our work every weekend, and looking back I think we should have done one more run in qualifying. Because of that the pressure before the last attempt was very high, but it’s our own fault. I also got caught in traffic, then went off track and couldn’t complete the lap.

So it wasn’t that we lacked pace. We just couldn’t put a lap together properly. You know how close the results have been this season, and it’s very hard to overtake on track, so qualifying is extremely important.”

When Liam was asked to describe how Laurent Mekies and Alan Permane, the heads of the two Red Bull teams, interact, he replied: “Of course, they have been working together now for a second year, and there is close cooperation between our teams. As you know, when Laurent moved to Red Bull, Alan replaced him, and I think his approaches to the job are very similar to those Mekies practised.

Both are very knowledgeable and experienced engineers who know how to shape a team, especially the specialists responsible for the technical side of things. That’s why we have a fast car now.”

Since Liam did two races for Red Bull Racing at the start of the year, he was asked what advice he would give Isack Hadjar if it is confirmed that the Frenchman will join the team next year.

“To be honest, being a driver for that team is a very tough task,” Liam answered. “It’s hard for me to look back and make a fair comparison simply because I only did two races there. But I think you just have to prepare as well as possible.

I tried to do everything I could. Of course, when you look back you always see things you could have done better. I would tell Isack this: ‘Don’t pay attention to what others say.’

Perhaps the level of difficulty is somewhat exaggerated. After all, we are all drivers, and everyone to some degree believes in themselves if they’re competing in Formula 1. We come into this sport thinking we are better than everyone else – otherwise we wouldn’t be here. You just have to believe in yourself.

Isack is doing a good job this year – so you just need to focus entirely on the tasks at hand, prepare as best as possible and not listen to anyone’s talk about what awaits you at Red Bull Racing. In reality, nobody knows that except the drivers who have already worked with the team.”
