Hamilton: Our race pace was slower than our rivals'.
Ferrari had high hopes for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but in the race Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finished eighth and ninth. With seven races remaining in the season the team dropped to third place in the Constructors' Championship, slipping behind Mercedes.
During the race Ferrari's strategists asked Leclerc to let Hamilton through so that he could try to attack Lando Norris on fresher tyres, but Lewis wasn't able to get ahead. On the last lap Ferrari asked Hamilton to give the position back to his teammate, and the seven‑time champion did slow on the pit straight, but Charles was not close enough and couldn't overtake Lewis before the chequered flag.
Lewis Hamilton (8th): "I'm not in the best mood right now because we were slow. Ultimately, a disappointing result. Maybe it's disappointing because I was optimistic after FP2. I felt comfortable in the car, but we chose the wrong direction for further setup work.
Our race pace was below the pace of the rivals ahead. Qualifying is very important on this track, as Williams' example clearly demonstrates. They did a great job, and I congratulate them.
I'm glad I climbed up from twelfth on the grid, but I'm not overly concerned about the position I finished in. We'll study everything and understand what could have been done better. As I said yesterday, operationally we have to do better.
Today it was very difficult to overtake. Actually, an unusual race in Baku where it was hard to overtake and to follow rivals closely. I'm disappointed to leave empty-handed."
Charles Leclerc (9th): "It was difficult to overtake, but I have to take responsibility for qualifying. Yesterday I made a mistake in the finale, but sometimes that happens. I'm having a very strong season, but this weekend I couldn't do my job well.
I paid the price for the mistake at the end of qualifying. In the race I got stuck in traffic, and we decided to take a risk with the strategy. When everyone who is faster than you is on the same strategy, that's the only hope.
Liam Lawson defended very well — he had strong straight-line speed, so passing him was almost impossible, even though I had the higher pace. Not the best Sunday for us.
Swapping positions with Lewis? For me there isn't much difference between eighth and ninth. Of course, we have certain agreements and general rules about how we act when positions are swapped. Today they didn't give the position back to me, but it's fine. My mood wouldn't have been better if I'd finished eighth. I don't care."
