James Vowles: My job is to help the drivers.
Williams team principal James Vowles said on the Business of Sport podcast that Alex Albon lacked self-confidence when he came from Red Bull, but now that's not an issue...
James Vowles: "I've known Alex since 2016. He, Lando Norris and George Russell grew up together, which in itself is curious. You can still see them together in the paddock.
When I signed him I knew he was very quick, but he lacked self-confidence; I think at times he didn't realise how good he actually was.
I needed to create a comfortable environment for him, to make him understand that he's bloody good. He is one of the best drivers in our sport. I'll be by his side and create the conditions that will allow him to grow and develop.
Alex has a natural talent, but I hope that thanks to my work he has really grown as a person and gained the confidence that allows him to give 100% every weekend.
My job is to help drivers, to make them understand that they are okay. It's exactly the same with Carlos. On Monday after a race he is angry with himself or with the team. And that's right. On Tuesday he calls and talks about how we can improve. That's exactly what I need."
