When Ford introduced the 7.3-liter Godzilla engine, it became a dream come true for hot-rodders. This engine has been extensively modified and found its way into a vast range of Blue Oval vehicles, from Fox Body Mustangs to F-150 pre-runners and beyond. However, I had never seen one installed in a squarebody Chevy C10 until now.
This particular truck belongs to Jody Gunter from Valley Mills, Texas. It's a 1986 Chevrolet C10 Silverado, which recently underwent testing at Late Model Restorations. Instead of using a used powerplant from a Super Duty pickup, Gunter opted for one of Ford's Godzilla crate engines and immediately added a 92-millimeter GT500 throttle body, a Ford Performance intake manifold, a stage one cam from Brian Tooley Racing with variable camshaft timing, an OBR control system, and impressive long-tube headers feeding into a custom exhaust.
Gunter didn’t hold back on the Chevy components, either. A Ford 6R80 automatic transmission with an upgraded stall converter manages the power and directs it to a 9-inch Ford rear end with 3.70 gears via a custom aluminum driveshaft. The truck features a sleek set of 15-inch rally wheels wrapped in 255/70 BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. Overall, it weighs in at a relatively light 4,585 pounds—not much more than a 392-powered Dodge Challenger.
In a previous engine dyno run, the 7.3-liter produced an impressive 626 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. Gunter brought the truck to LMR for an accurate power rating at the wheels, and it delivered an admirable 473 hp and 512 lb-ft of torque on 93-octane fuel.
Take a look (and listen) here:
The C10 earned Gunter some cash at the Holley Ford Fest with a quarter-mile time of 11.757 seconds and a trap speed of 114.16 miles per hour. Given that the fastest I’ve ever achieved in a Squarebody Chevy was around 60 miles per hour, I can only imagine the thrill of hitting nearly double that speed. Of course, Gunter knows exactly how it feels, and I bet he’d say it was quite exhilarating.
