Montoya: Ferrari's main problem is related to politics.
Juan-Pablo Montoya is convinced that the Ferrari car has obvious shortcomings, and this is clearly visible if you analyze the footage shot in São Paulo by the onboard cameras mounted on Max Verstappen’s RB21.
When the Red Bull Racing driver was chasing Lewis Hamilton, it was apparent that the Ferrari was constantly sliding around the track, although this was partly due to damage sustained on the first lap in the incident with Carlos Sainz.
Montoya, taking part in a podcast by the sports publication AS Colombia, joined those experts who believe the Scuderia’s problem is not the drivers at all, but the approaches practiced within the Italian team and the methods of its leadership.
“Look at the footage from Max’s car, which was behind Lewis,” said the former Williams and McLaren driver. “My God, that Ferrari handled the bumps on the track very poorly, but there’s one thing I can’t understand. To me, it’s completely obvious that the Scuderia is doing very badly, and at some point you have to admit: ‘Yes, we were wrong, what we’re doing isn’t working, and we need to try something else.’”
We reported on the mixed reaction of the motorsport press to John Elkann’s recent remarks, after which the team’s press office attempted to soften the Ferrari president’s comments. Montoya has his own take on the situation: “The reason he said that is because there is a certain pressure being applied to him within the company. The best way to counter that is to divert it away from yourself and direct it at others.
But you have to understand that a moment will come when it becomes clear: the approaches the team practices simply don’t work. Ferrari’s biggest problem is related to politics — there’s too much of it. And speaking about the future, about prospects, about the direction things are headed, I suppose I don’t really believe Ferrari will be able to win the championship.”
