Herbert: Lewis and Charles get straight to the point; it's their job.
Johnny Herbert, like a number of other experts, including former Formula 1 drivers, believes that John Elkann, Ferrari's president, was wrong when he said that Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc should think more about driving and talk less.
"I think it was said very harshly," Herbert commented while appearing on the Stay on Track podcast. "First of all, Lewis has won the world championship several times when he raced for McLaren and Mercedes, he has that kind of experience, and he knows how such teams operate. And they have a very methodical approach to work.
Whereas Ferrari is constantly in this awful situation where it seems that nothing is working for them. Even though the team has all the pieces of the puzzle, it just seems that they always come from different boxes.
In my opinion, Lewis and Charles are speaking to the point. They criticize the team and the car's performance because that's their job. Their job is to drive at the highest possible speeds, but to do that, to be in contention for race wins and championships, you need a good car. That's why sometimes drivers have to make such statements and say that the team must change a few things for everything to work.
And right now Ferrari has problems, because a lot is always expected from that team. So when John Elkann almost suggests to his drivers that they should shut up, that's unlikely to help the cause. I think it will become even harder for them to work in such an atmosphere, because their task also includes critically evaluating the team's work."
