Ayo Komatsu: We can compete on any track.
The American Haas F1 team is preparing for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which it also considers a home race, as it does the rounds in Miami and Austin. Esteban Ocon took part in both Grands Prix already held on the new street circuit, then as an Alpine driver, while Oliver Bearman will get to know it for the first time. The team hopes to continue its run of strong performances, as it is only two points behind Aston Martin, which sits sixth in the Constructors' Championship.
Ayo Komatsu, team principal: “We head to Vegas after the Brazilian round, where the team once again delivered a good result. The team is on the up, and we know what we are fighting for. There are three races to go, and our mindset remains the same: we intend to attack at all of these circuits, but we set objectives for each round individually.
Vegas is a fairly demanding street circuit with a very long straight, which is different from the one at Interlagos. But knowing the characteristics of our car, I think we can compete at any track. The challenge will be to get the right speeds out of both drivers.
Esteban, by his own admission, hasn’t been able to fully unlock the car’s potential in qualifying, although he shows excellent race pace. We need to make sure both drivers perform well in qualifying, and then there will be a chance to score points with both cars.
I am one hundred percent confident we can do this. But to achieve it we need to work on track with maximum efficiency from the very start of the weekend, fully focusing on the priority tasks — we must get the setup right and help our drivers to give their all. If we manage that, the result will follow.”
Oliver Bearman: “I’m excited that we’re heading to Las Vegas, because I’ve never been to the western US. The track looks fantastic, it runs along the famous Las Vegas Strip, and I’m anticipating a great weekend.
I’ve never raced there, but I’ve studied the circuit on the simulator — it’s very fast, with lots of long straights and tricky corners. I think the most interesting thing will be that temperatures there are usually quite low, and the grip level is too, which will make our job harder.
But I think we have a quick car, so we want to score points at all three tracks in this final triple-header and we’ll try to do that.”
Esteban Ocon: “The last three races of the season are ahead, and now Las Vegas awaits us for the third time, shining with lights. It’s a truly unique circuit, it’s incredibly fun to drive, and most drivers are flat out for almost the entire lap.
Racing in the heart of this famous city feels quite surreal, and it’s still hard to believe we’re racing along the Las Vegas Strip. Our goal for this weekend is to extract everything from the car and try to score points. Our team is in a tight fight in the Constructors’ Championship, so we must take every opportunity and we’re ready to accept the challenge.”
