The FIA is ready to reconsider the regulatory requirements.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said that the FIA is examining the possibility of changing the regulations after the disqualification of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in Las Vegas.
The McLaren drivers were disqualified because the thickness of the skid plank under the floor was less than the 9 millimetre minimum allowed by the regulations. The team could not challenge the stewards' decision because the regulations clearly state that a technical non-compliance automatically leads to disqualification. However, Stella said that the FIA is exploring the possibility of applying less severe sanctions in future depending on the severity of the infringement.
“We, together with the technical delegate, confirmed the correctness of the skid plank thickness measurement,” Andrea Stella said. “Even if the wear is relatively small and is observed only in one place, the regulations clearly stipulate that at the finish of the race the thickness of the plank on each measured section must be no less than 9 mm.
Unlike the sporting or financial regulations, there is no principle of proportionality in the application of penalties for technical breaches. The FIA has acknowledged that in the future measures are needed to address this lack of proportionality, to ensure that minor and accidental technical infringements with minimal or zero impact on the result do not lead to disproportionately severe consequences.
Moreover, I would like to remind you that the FIA stressed that the breach was not intentional, there was no attempt on our part to circumvent the regulations, and that, as we explained to the stewards, there were mitigating circumstances.”
