Verstappen advises Antonelli to put the GT dream on hold for the time being.
"He’s extremely enthusiastic about the GT3 program."
Max Verstappen's disappointment following another challenging grand prix in 2026 was momentarily lifted in Shanghai when the discussion shifted to Kimi Antonelli’s first pole position and Formula 1 victory. The two drivers share a friendship that goes far beyond the racetrack. “They are truly beautiful moments,” Verstappen commented regarding the significance of first poles and victories when asked by Viaplay about the 19-year-old Antonelli’s achievements. “I’m very happy for him. I think there’s a weight that is lifted when you secure your first win. This won't be his last.”
The youthful Italian Antonelli, who was emotional on the podium on Sunday, has formed a genuine connection with the four-time world champion. Verstappen noted that Antonelli approaches him several times during race weekends with questions, though not exclusively about Formula 1. “He’s also very excited about the GT3 program,” Verstappen said with a smile. Antonelli, whose father operates his own GT team, seems to have ambitions of sharing a car with Verstappen—specifically a Mercedes adorned with Red Bull stickers. “He really wants to race together,” Verstappen chuckled. “We’ll see what the future holds. He needs to concentrate on Formula 1 for now. That car is incredibly fast, so he has plenty of opportunities to win this season. We have more than enough time for other projects.”
Verstappen himself won’t have to wait long to race again. With the cancellation of the Gulf races presenting new opportunities, he will head straight to the Nordschleife before Suzuka for an NLS race that was specially rescheduled to fit his calendar. “We’re going to the Nordschleife on Thursday night,” he said happily. “On Friday we’ll do some testing. We want to try a few things and I want to become familiar with that car. In the race, we aim to gain experience and optimize the car for the 24-hour race.”
He concluded the interview with his usual brevity. “Now, I’m heading home quickly!”
