There’s a hybrid Corvette on the scene and the anticipated electric Corvette is absent, but Chevy is about to satisfy fans with something they truly desire: a new V8 along with the return of the Grand Sport.
The 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport made its debut during a parade lap at the 12 Hours of Sebring race in Florida on Saturday, alongside the four previous generations of the model.
Chevrolet is tight-lipped about specifics, except to confirm that the nameplate makes a comeback for the 2027 model year. What we do know is that it exists, we have a glimpse of its appearance (spoiler alert: the signature blue paint with white stripes and red hash marks are back), and it's confirmed that this model will showcase “the next generation of GM V8 technology.”
The only other official updates about the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport from Team Chevy are that it “is for the purist” and that it “will be a high-volume model.” So, no limited edition here, folks. Sorry dealers, it may be difficult to justify markups and “market adjustments” for this one.
The Grand Sport isn't the sole iconic nameplate returning with this C8 Corvette variant. Get ready for the introduction of the LS6.
Although GM is keeping quiet on crucial information, we are quite confident that the “next-generation of GM V8 technology” refers to a new LS6 pushrod V8 featuring a cross-plane crank, direct and port injection, and 6.7 liters of displacement. This sixth-generation small block V8 will be naturally aspirated (hence the purist comment) and is expected to generate around 530 to 550 horsepower. This represents a notable enhancement over the 6.2-liter LT2 V8 found in the current Stingray, which delivers 495 hp.
One thing is certain: the Grand Sport and the rest of the Corvette lineup will not feature a manual transmission.
If we were to speculate, which we are definitely not, the new LS6 might replace the 6.2-liter LT2 V8 as the engine in the base Stingray. Subsequently, the LS6 could be introduced in the Grand Sport, paired with Z06 suspension components. Expanding the lineup could also include a proposed Grand Sport X, intended to replace the E-Ray. This change is due to potential consumer confusion, as many might mistake the E-Ray for an electric Corvette instead of a hybrid, and would pair the front electric motor from the electrified Corvette with the new LS6 for over 700 hp and all-wheel drive.
This would result in the 2027 Corvette lineup featuring the Stingray, Grand Sport, Grand Sport X, Z06, ZR1, and ultimately, the ZR1X. Of course, this is just our interpretation of the clues. We will have to wait for Team Chevy to reveal the complete 2027 Corvette lineup, which we expect will happen soon, especially with the Grand Sport's impressive introduction on the racetrack over the weekend.
